Vein Conditions
San Diego, California

Varicose veins are outwards signs of inner damage. When valves inside veins weaken or become damaged or diseased, gravity takes over causing blood to pool in the vessels of the leg, resulting in blue, bumpy, ropelike veins. Contributing factors can include:
- Family history/heredity
- Weight
- Pregnancy
- Aging
- Trauma
- Gender: Women get varicose veins up to four times as often as men
- Prolonged standing or sitting
Patients may experience aching, heaviness, swelling, throbbing, spasms or painful cramping. If left untreated, some varicose veins (identified as superficial venous reflux disease) are progressive with symptoms worsening over time. Varicose veins can lead to serious problems such as dermatitis, skin ulcers, or phlebitis, and inflammation of the veins.
Cosmetic vein problems of the leg usually fall into two categories:
Telangiectasias (spider veins): Small veins that are typically red or blue in color and are close to the surface of the skin. These veins can be treated with injections, lasers or some combination of both.
Varicose veins: Caused by abnormal valves in the long saphenous and small saphenous veins or an abnormal connection between the deep veins in the lower extremities (legs) and the superficial veins called: perforator veins. This abnormal connection allows blood to spill out (reflux) from the deeper veins to the surface and into either the long saphenous vein or the short saphenous vein. The long saphenous vein starts in the groin and the short saphenous vein starts behind the knee.
