Eyelid Surgery

San Diego, California

For many people, the signs of aging can concentrate around the eyes. Loss of firmness and resiliency in the skin and underlying muscle tissue of the eyes can lead to a number of different cosmetic problems, including the following:

  • Wrinkling, including crows' feet
  • Sagging upper eyelids
  • Bags underneath the eyes

These and other signs of aging can contribute to a tired, prematurely aged appearance. Fortunately, modern cosmetic surgery offers simple, targeted solutions to problems such as these, so you can regain your natural, vibrant, youthful appearance with a minimally invasive procedure.

Upper and lower lid procedures

Eyelid surgery, technically called blepharoplasty, is available as an upper or lower lid procedure—although many people choose to combine both procedures.

Upper lid blepharoplasty targets signs of aging that concentrate on the upper eye area. This includes wrinkling, excess skin, and sagging and drooping of the upper eyelid. This drooping, referred to as ptosis, can become so severe in some cases that it obstructs the vision. In these cases, many health insurance policies will cover an upper lid blepharoplasty procedure as a therapeutic measure to restore eyesight.

In an upper lid blepharoplasty procedure, a small incision is made along the inside of the upper eyelid. From this incision, the skin and underlying muscle are pulled tight, and any excess fat and skin is removed from the upper eyelid, restoring the upper eyelid to a taut, more youthful appearance.

Lower lid blepharoplasty concentrates on the area directly below the eyes. In a lower lid blepharoplasty procedure, a small incision is made on the inside of the lower eyelid, through which your surgeon will remove excess fat and skin, and tighten the underlying muscle, reducing or eliminating the appearance of under eye bags, and restoring a smoother, more youthful look.

In many cases, when the signs of aging are evident both in the upper and lower eye areas, we can combine the upper lid eye surgery and lower lid eye surgery into a single, comprehensive procedure to rejuvenate the eye area.
